My inquiry into interactive experiences in real/physical space span from university environment. More precisely I was curious to understand how a group of creatives can approach the design process of such interactive experience, especially if it’s not meant only as an installation but a narrative.

At the university we often were given tasks to work in teams and to develop prototypes for an interactive experience, however, the guidelines given were vague: to make reasearch and see how an interactive experience can hold the essence of this reasearch while telling a story. It was all exploratory and based on previous projects of others. Often the outcome would be dictated by the easiest way out, meaning capitalizing on the skills of people in the group and imitating something that has been done already. When unique ideas came, there was no consensus on how to move forward. And the reasons, the reasons for making an experience, the reason for choosing one or the other sensor or type of interaction; this was rooted in intuition and aesthetic, both being subjective to developer's taste. While students produced some interesting projects, there was no way to compare them to each other based on specific parameters (something so important in academic work).

I really wanted to find a way to structure the creative process and find the tools, which could be used from project to project - not physical tools but intellectual - propose a way of thinking about creating a narrative through technology-mediated experience in physical space. Like in music, every improvisation needs a structure, I wanted to describe how such structure can be developed for interactive projects. Then, within this structure, creativity can take place. I wrote a thesis for my master’s in multimedia and this website is based on my findings.
